What ACCA says is changing

ACCA is redesigning its qualification framework. Based on information checked on 31 October 2026, the updated qualification introduces new level titles: Foundations, Knowledge, Expertise, and Strategic Professional, alongside new Essential Employability Modules.

This structure differs from the current arrangement of Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills, and Strategic Professional. Learn is independent of ACCA and cannot construct an individual exam plan for you, but understanding the published transition milestones will help you navigate your upcoming sittings with clarity.

Key dates in ACCA's published timeline

According to ACCA's published timeline (Future qualification timeline, 2026), the transition will roll out across several phases in 2027:

  • June 2027 marks the final sitting for the current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams. After this session, students transition to the redesigned qualification.
  • July 2027 introduces the first on-demand exams for Foundations and Knowledge, alongside the release of the Essential Employability Modules for Foundations, Knowledge, and Expertise and Strategic Professional.
  • August 2027 is listed on the timeline as the final entry point for the inaugural sitting under the new structure.
  • September 2027 is the first official exam sitting for Expertise and Strategic Professional papers.
  • October 2027 is the scheduled results release date for that initial September session.

Because ACCA notes that timelines may receive further updates, you should always check the live Future qualification timeline before booking exams or planning study leave.

How the redesigned exams differ

Under the redesigned route, students progress through levels in a set order: Knowledge, followed by Expertise, and finally Strategic Professional. The Foundations level serves as the starting point for students who do not meet direct entry criteria. Within each level, the numbered sequence of papers serves as guidance rather than a strict requirement, and you may complete the level's Essential Employability Module at any point during your progression through that tier. However, you must finish all exams and the required module for a level before moving forward to the next one.

The requirements at Strategic Professional are also changing. Under the current structure, students must sit two Options papers. From September 2027, the redesigned Strategic Professional level requires:

  • S1 Sustainability and Business Reporting
  • S2 Strategic Business Leader
  • One Options exam
  • The Ethical Sustainable Leadership Essential Employability Module

The single Options exam must be selected from five papers: SAA Audit and Assurance Professional, SCF Corporate Finance Professional, STA Taxation Advisory Professional, SDS Data Science Professional, or SPI Performance and Insights Professional.

ACCA membership requires only one Options pass from September 2027, and additional Options papers are not compulsory for general qualification. ACCA notes that certain jurisdictions may require specific combinations for local audit licensing, and the association states it will provide targeted guidance for those candidates.

What current students should check

Your existing academic progress remains protected: ACCA awards credit for equivalent elements completed under the current syllabus. However, Learn does not determine transitions or credit awards. To see how your specific completed papers map across to the 2027 syllabus, enter your examination history directly into ACCA's dedicated transition tool and review the Future qualification FAQs (2026).

If you are still booking current exams, check deadlines on ACCA's important dates page. The current route is in the ACCA Qualification guide.

Two other components remain consistent in the redesigned model:

  • Practical Experience Requirement (PER): You still need a minimum of 36 months of supervised experience in a relevant role alongside your performance objectives. ACCA states that some employability modules will allow students to count simulated experience toward those 36 months, though you must check official documentation for the exact allowances assigned to each module.
  • Exemptions: ACCA says up to nine exam exemptions continue under the redesigned qualification. Those redesigned exemptions show on the calculator from July 2027.

Official facts stay on the ACCA guide.
