CIBN

The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, who may enter the ACIB exams, and how those exams are sat.

Overview

The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) sets the knowledge standard for individuals entering the banking profession in Nigeria and conducts the examinations leading to professional standing. Learn is an independent academic workspace and is not affiliated with the CIBN, nor does Learn award the Associateship of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (ACIB). Practice on Learn is not currently available for this examination.

The Institute began in November 1963 as a local centre of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, London, held its first indigenous foundation examination in April 1978, and conducted its first professional examination in April 1984. The flagship professional award earned upon completing the Institute's three professional examination stages is the ACIB. The separate Microfinance certification is distinct and does not constitute the ACIB award.

Eligibility

To sit the professional examinations, you must register as a student member of the Institute. Your assigned membership number serves as your examination number.

For the professional banking examinations leading to the ACIB, the minimum entry qualification approved by the Governing Council is a first degree (such as a BSc) in any discipline, a Higher National Diploma (HND), or an equivalent professional qualification accepted by the Institute from a recognised institution. Qualifications such as the senior school certificate, Ordinary National Diploma (OND), or undergraduate status are listed by the Institute for ordinary membership and the separate Microfinance certification, not as the entry route for the ACIB professional examinations.

Registration

You must complete your student membership registration before you can enter for any examination diet. Examination registration is carried out online when a registration window opens for an upcoming diet.

Candidates should take note of conflicting instructions between different Institute pages regarding examination venues:

  • An older registration guide at portal.cibng.org/how.asp instructs candidates to select a physical examination centre during the online process.
  • The official CB and C Overview and the February 2026 diet instructions state that examinations are conducted remotely via online proctoring, where candidates test in a suitable quiet space of their own choosing rather than at a physical centre.

Always use the instruction sheet for the diet you are entering. Confirm the registration steps on CIBN's site before you book.

If you qualify through prior qualifications or executive banking experience rather than the standard three-stage sequence, see Routes to the CIBN ACIB.

Examinations are conducted using remote online proctoring rather than in physical halls. According to the Institute's overview page, remote proctoring was piloted in October 2022 for certification programmes and fully implemented across all examinations in April 2023.

There is an unresolved policy statement on the Institute's overview page regarding the curriculum lifetime. As checked on 31 October 2026, the page states that the Banking Professional syllabus became effective in January 2020 and was scheduled by policy to expire in October 2025 following a four-year cycle and a one-year transition. However, the same page continues to list the subjects detailed above. Candidates should confirm with the Institute whether an updated syllabus structure has superseded these subjects.

Exam dates

The Institute operates four annual examination diets: February, April, July, and October.

According to the official overview, during the 2025 calendar year, only certification programmes (excluding Microfinance) sat across all four diets, while ACIB candidates and Microfinance candidates sat only in April and October. The same source stated that full implementation across all four diets for all candidates was planned to start in 2026.

The Institute issued remote proctoring instructions for a February 2026 diet covering Banking Professional and Certification candidates, for which registration closed at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 19 January 2026. That registration deadline has passed and applies only to that specific diet. Future diet timetables, entry opening dates, and deadlines are published diet by diet; check the live CIBN portal directly to confirm dates for upcoming diets before planning your calendar.

Results

CIBN's student affairs handles statements of results, transcripts, and an appeal process. The overview does not publish a result date or a pass mark. Confirm both on the Institute's site.
