File Concepts and Classification

What this topic covers

Candidates should be able to define basic terms such as File, record, field, and data item. They should identify and use basic data types (numeric, alphabetic, and alphanumeric), explain the relationship among file structure items (Data item – field - record-file-database), classify files according to their organization (Serial, Sequential, Index and random), access files appropriately (Serial, Sequential and Random), and classify files into Master, Transaction, and Reference types. Additionally, they should explain the criteria used in classifying files, including nature of content (Program and Data), organization method, storage medium, date, and size.
