Foreign-trained nurses in Nigeria: NMCN verification, adaptation, and licensing
NMCN
Understand the official NMCN registration pathway for foreign-trained nurses, including credential verification, orientation programmes, examination requirements, and licensing.
Regulatory requirement to register before practice
Welcome to this guide on transitioning your nursing career to Nigeria. Anyone holding a foreign nursing qualification must be officially registered and licensed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) before legally practicing nursing or midwifery in the country. Practicing without NMCN registration is unlawful under Nigerian law. This requirement applies regardless of any licenses you may hold in the UK, USA, Canada, the Philippines, or other countries.
Please note that Learn is an educational workspace designed to help you study, and we are not the NMCN. For official regulatory authority over nursing practice and foreign credentials, you will work directly with the Council.
Document verification and eligibility prerequisites
Before your qualification evaluation is approved, the NMCN requires primary source verification of your credentials. You must arrange for your official university or college transcript to be sent directly to the NMCN. Additionally, you need to submit your certificate of nursing education and a current letter of good standing or verification of license standing from the regulatory board in the country of your original training.
You must also meet foundational academic requirements. The NMCN requires secondary school O'Level results showing five credits in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, achieved in no more than two sittings. You can read more about foundational academic requirements on our eligibility page. Finally, you will need to provide your birth certificate and valid identification.
The adaptation and clinical orientation programme
Foreign-trained candidates are typically required to complete a clinical orientation or adaptation posting at an accredited Nigerian teaching hospital. This orientation is essential for understanding local healthcare systems, public health reporting, and hospital workflows. It also prepares you to manage local and tropical disease patterns, such as malaria, typhoid, Lassa fever, and specific maternal health protocols.
Please be aware that there is conflicting information in official NMCN notices regarding the exact duration of this clinical orientation. Some published circulars state a minimum of six months, while other notices cite twelve months of adaptation. Because of this conflict, candidates must verify the exact duration assigned to them in their individual clearance letter from the Council.
Taking the NMCN Professional Qualifying Examination
A foreign degree does not exempt you from the licensing exam. After completing your assigned orientation and receiving your clearance letter, you must sit and pass the NMCN Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) before receiving your permanent registration number and practicing license.
The examination format includes Computer Based Test (CBT) theory papers and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) practical stations. You can review the structure of the professional examination on our exam format page. As you prepare for the qualifying examination, you can access study materials and practice within the Learn workspace. After the exam, you can find guidance on post-exam verification on our results page.
Active application submissions and verifications are managed exclusively through the official NMCN portals at https://www.nmcn.gov.ng/registration1.html and https://www.nmcn.gov.ng/verify.html. We strongly warn against unauthorized individuals or social media agents who claim they can fast-track foreign licenses. Always use the official channels for your application.
Once you have passed the examination and met all requirements, you will proceed to the final steps of securing your license. You can find more information about standard professional registration after passing the exam on our registration page.
