How to prepare for the NMCN Professional Qualifying Examination
NMCN
A practical study guide for the NMCN PQE covering CBT theory papers, OSCE practical stations, clinical logbook revision, and timed mock practice.
The structure of the NMCN qualifying examination
Welcome to your preparation for the NMCN Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE). Please note that Learn is an academic workspace and is not the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
The examination evaluates your readiness through a dual assessment model. You will take Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for your theoretical papers and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) to demonstrate your clinical skills. Before you can sit the examination, you must be indexed with the Council and cleared by your accredited training institution. You can review the indexing guide for details on student eligibility verification.
The Council conducts the examination twice or three times annually depending on your cadre. According to ICAN, General Nursing and Post-Basic examinations are held in May and November, while Midwifery examinations take place in March and September. Please confirm these dates on the live portal before paying or booking.
Building a high-yield study schedule
A structured study schedule is essential for covering the extensive NMCN curriculum. Rather than reading textbooks from cover to cover, organize your revision by clinical systems. Focus your time on the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, reproductive, neurological, and gastrointestinal systems. This approach helps you connect anatomy, pathophysiology, and nursing management in a logical way.
You will need to balance your study time across the different papers. Paper 1 typically covers foundational biomedical sciences, clinical nursing sciences, medical-surgical nursing, and pharmacology. Paper 2 focuses on maternal-child health, mental health, community health, and professional practice ethics. Ensure you also allocate time to complete your institutional requirements, which include prescribed clinical procedures, case studies, and signed logbooks prior to your examination clearance.
Mastering the CBT theory papers
The CBT theory papers are designed to test your application of knowledge through clinical scenario questions, rather than simple rote recall. When studying, focus on high-yield domains such as the nursing process, drug dosage calculations, fluid and electrolyte balance, emergency interventions, infection prevention, and Council ethics.
Please note that there is conflicting information regarding the exact test length. Public circulars state that the exact number of CBT questions and minutes per paper is not standardized across all post-basic specialties, while working documents recommend preparing for fast-paced multiple-choice questioning. Because of this conflict, you must confirm the specific exam-centre instructions on the day of your test.
Preparing for the OSCE practical stations
The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) evaluates your practical bedside procedure skills and clinical competence. During the OSCE, you will rotate through timed clinical stations where examiners observe your performance based on specific task sheets.
Essential preparation involves practicing core skills such as aseptic technique, wound dressing, vital signs monitoring, parenteral drug administration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and maternal assessment. The stations will also test your infection control practices, physical assessment abilities, patient communication, and documentation. As you practice, emphasize verbalizing your steps clearly to the examiner and adhering strictly to your approved institutional checklists and standard clinical procedure manuals.
Practicing with Learn
Active testing is one of the most effective ways to prepare for your theory papers. Testing yourself under exam conditions reveals knowledge gaps much better than passive re-reading. You can build your confidence through timed mock practice and question analysis at /exams/nmcn/practice.
