Overview
The Uganda National Examinations Board, known as UNEB, is the national assessment body in Uganda rather than the name of an individual exam paper. In 2026, the Board is conducting three primary and secondary examination cycles: the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE), the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE), and the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE). Learn is an academic workspace independent of UNEB, and practice for UNEB is not available on Learn at this time.
Registration
Registration for the 2026 examination sittings is closed. According to the June 2026 notices published on the Board's website, normal registration for PLE, UCE, and UACE was extended to midnight on 30 June 2026, which allowed newly accredited examination centres to submit their candidates. Late registration subsequently ran from 1 July to 31 July 2026, and the Board's 30 June 2026 press statement confirmed that no further registration would be accepted after 31 July.
For candidates registering during the late window, the 1 June 2026 notice set the late surcharge at 100 percent for PLE and 50 percent for UCE and UACE. The government covers registration fees for candidates sponsored under Universal Primary Education (UPE), Universal Secondary Education (USE), and Universal Post O-Level Education and Training (UPOLET). In its 30 June 2026 statement, the Board noted that candidates under these universal education programmes would not be accommodated during the late registration window. Additionally, an official registration update on 17 June 2026 emphasized that under the UNEB Act, Cap 259, section 33, it is an offence to charge fees that UNEB has not prescribed and to refer to those charges as UNEB fees.
Official sources contain conflicting details regarding registration deadlines and late fee structures. The June 2026 website notices state that normal registration closed on 30 June 2026 and that late registration carried a single 50 percent surcharge for UCE and UACE throughout July. In contrast, the fee circular posted on the Board's e-registration site prints a normal registration closing date of 31 May 2020, and divides the late surcharge for UCE and UACE into two periods: 50 percent from 1 June to 30 June, and 100 percent from 1 July to 31 July. Furthermore, the Board's June 2024 client service charter outlines a standing target to complete candidate registration by 31 May each year, which conflicts with the extension to 30 June granted in 2026. Because official notices and circulars can vary across channels, candidates and parents should always confirm current dates and terms on the live UNEB portal before making any payments or booking entries.
The 2026 sittings
The schedule for the 2026 examinations was announced in a statement issued on 23 September 2026 by Executive Director Dan N. Odongo, published through the Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation.
The three examination windows are scheduled as follows:
- UCE: Candidate briefing took place on Thursday 8 October, and examinations conclude on Tuesday 3 November.
- PLE: Candidate briefing took place on Friday 30 October, and examinations conclude on Wednesday 4 November.
- UACE: Candidate briefing takes place on Friday 7 November, and examinations conclude on Friday 5 December.
As of 31 October 2026, UCE is in its final days, the PLE briefing was conducted yesterday, and UACE has not yet started. Candidates should check the specific dates and sessions for their remaining papers on the official timetables. The Board distributes timetables to schools, makes them available on school portals, and provides hard-copy versions, including braille copies for candidates with visual impairments. You can access the official schedules online via the PLE 2026 timetable, the UCE 2026 timetable, and the UACE 2026 timetable.
How many candidates
According to the provisional candidature figures reported in the 23 September 2026 statement, total registration across all three levels reached 1,627,885 candidates. This marked an increase of 211,437 learners over the 2025 total of 1,416,448.
The 23 September 2026 provisional breakdown recorded:
- PLE: 920,796 candidates
- UCE: 503,214 candidates
- UACE: 203,875 candidates
Female candidates made up 52 percent of the overall entry, while male candidates made up 48 percent. Candidates sponsored by the government under universal education programmes accounted for 52 percent of the total register. The statement also reported that 6,090 candidates across the sittings are learners with special needs. These numbers represent the provisional counts reported on 23 September 2026 rather than a live total.
Results
The UNEB client service charter published in June 2024 sets out general targets for the release of national examination results. According to the charter, the Board aims to release PLE results by 20 January, UCE results by 30 January, and UACE results by 28 February.
These dates are targets in the 2024 charter. They are not a confirmed release day for the 2026 cycle.
The UCE rules are in UCE 2026 registration. The UACE rules are in UACE 2026 registration.
