Overview
The National Examinations Council (NECO) is a Nigerian examination body. Learn is an academic workspace and is not affiliated with NECO. You can find official information directly from the Council's website at https://neco.gov.ng/.
NECO was established in April 1999. Its core mandate includes conducting the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for both internal and external candidates. The Council also conducts the National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE), the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), and the National Gifted Examination. This guide focuses specifically on the NECO SSCE.
This page will help you understand the NECO SSCE by covering:
Eligibility
The NECO SSCE has two sittings: an internal sitting for school candidates and an external sitting for private candidates.
The 2026 internal guidelines state that the internal sitting is for candidates in their final year of senior secondary school (SS3) who are enrolled in schools in Nigeria or overseas. It is not intended for private candidates. The internal exams page confirms this is for final-year school candidates.
Private candidates use the external sitting. The definition of an external candidate is described in two ways:
- The external exams page states it is for candidates who are not in the school system.
- The NECO homepage says it is for candidates that have attempted and have deficiencies to make up.
You can learn more about the number of subjects you can take under the Exam format section.
Registration
Registration for the internal and external sittings follows different processes and has separate fees.
Internal Candidate Registration
Registration for the internal SSCE is managed by your school, not by individual candidates. The process involves offline registration, validation, and activation at the NECO state office, followed by a quota payment. If fewer than 20 candidates are registered on the first payment, an unviable centre fee applies.
The 2026 internal guidelines state that a National Identification Number (NIN) is compulsory for all candidates, and each candidate receives a National Learners Identification Number (NLIN).
NECO lists registration and related charges separately for the two sittings, and says its fees can change. Check the SSCE Internal page or SSCE External page for current charges before paying.
The registration window for the 2026 internal SSCE has already closed. Please see the Exam dates section for details on the external sitting's current window.
External Candidate Registration
External candidates register through their own accounts on the external portal. NECO's steps are: create an account, activate it, pay, enter biodata and subjects, capture fingerprints, and print a photocard.
The external sitting has its own registration and payment instructions. Check the official SSCE External page for current charges before paying.
Exam format
The internal exams page states that NECO usually examines 76 subjects. Candidates are required to take a minimum of eight subjects and a maximum of nine. This includes four cross-cutting compulsory subjects, which were not named in the text read on 20 October 2026. You are also expected to choose three to four subjects from your area of specialization and one elective subject outside it.
The 2026 internal timetable shows that papers can include practical, oral, objective, and essay components, each with its own specific duration. The internal sitting for 2026 took place from 15 June to 23 July 2026.
The 2026 internal guidelines indicate that the examination includes both computer-based and paper examinations, and candidates will be notified which mode applies to their subjects. The external exams page also describes the 2026 external SSCE as a dual mode of computer-based examination and pen and paper.
A later timetable may introduce changes to the papers. For detailed subject content, you can refer to the official NECO SSCE syllabus. For guidance on preparing for the exam, visit How to Prepare for NECO SSCE.
Exam dates
It is important to distinguish between the internal and external sitting dates, as their registration and examination periods differ.
2026 Internal SSCE Dates
The registration for the 2026 internal SSCE ran from Monday 19 January to Monday 25 May. Late registration was from Tuesday 26 May to Friday 29 May, with the registration site closing at 11:59 pm on 29 May. No extension was granted.
The examination for the 2026 internal SSCE took place from Monday 15 June to Thursday 23 July 2026. Both the registration and examination windows for the 2026 internal SSCE have now passed.
2026 External SSCE Dates
Registration for the 2026 external SSCE began on 7 July and runs until midnight on 26 October. Late registration runs from 27 October to 3 November. NECO says an additional late registration charge applies; check the official portal for the current amount.
The examination for the 2026 external SSCE is scheduled from Wednesday 4 November to Saturday 21 November 2026. As of 20 October 2026, the normal registration window for the external SSCE is still open.
Please note that a banner on the NECO homepage regarding 2025 internal registration does not refer to the current 2026 external window. No official dates for 2027 were found in the available sources. Always confirm current dates and deadlines on the official NECO portal.
Results
Released NECO SSCE results can be checked on the official results portal at https://results.neco.gov.ng/.
According to the results page, checking SSCE and BECE results requires a purchased token. This token can be shared. NCEE and the gifted examination do not require a token. The results checker notice states that a token would be used to check a result once (and for five times), and that another token cannot check the same result again. Further checks after this use e-Verify. The NECO homepage describes e-Verify as an instant and bulk verification service.
The year list on the results checker portal runs from 2025 back to 2000. No information on the price of a token was found.
School candidates
The internal SSCE sitting is specifically for school candidates. As mentioned under Eligibility, this sitting is for candidates in their final year of senior secondary school (SS3) and is not for private candidates. Your school is responsible for managing your registration process.
All candidates are required to have a National Identification Number (NIN) and will receive a National Learners Identification Number (NLIN).
There is a conflict regarding the Continuous Assessment Scores (CAS) for internal candidates. The 2026 internal guidelines state that third-year CAS scores are no longer required for candidates. However, the internal exams page still states that results will not be released without these scores. Schools should confirm the current official policy directly with NECO.
Private candidates
The external SSCE sitting is available for private candidates. The external exams page states that this sitting is for candidates who are not in the school system, that is, private candidates. The NECO homepage says it is conducted for candidates that have attempted and have deficiencies to make up. Those are two different sentences.
Private candidates are responsible for their own registration process. Check the official external registration page for current charges. The exam dates for the 2026 external SSCE are in November.
NECO's own steps for external candidates include fingerprint capture at the cafe nearest to the candidate, and the computer-based test portal for the dual-mode examination.
Resits
No specific notice regarding resits for the NECO SSCE was found in the available sources. The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has its own resit process, with separate dates and fees, which are not applicable to the SSCE.
The only mention of making up deficiencies is on the NECO homepage, which states that the external SSCE is for candidates who have attempted the exam and have deficiencies to make up. This is covered in the Private candidates section. No information was found regarding a limit on how many times a candidate may sit the exam or any specific resit fees for the SSCE.
