NMCN Indexing Guide: Requirements, School Clearance and Index Numbers
NMCN
Learn what NMCN indexing means, why your index number matters, how your school participates, and which document and payment details need current confirmation.
NMCN indexing is the process of recording an eligible nursing or midwifery student in the Council's database. During indexing, NMCN checks the student's details and entry qualifications against the approved requirements for the programme.
Indexing is not the same as school admission. A school may offer you admission first, but NMCN still checks whether the programme, student qualifications and approved intake meet its standards.
Why your index number matters
NMCN issues a unique index number to an eligible student. The Council says this number is used when applying for the Professional Qualifying Examination.
Keep the number exactly as issued. Do not add spaces, change characters or use another student's number. Save it with your application record, school correspondence and payment receipt.
An application number and an index number may serve different purposes. Do not assume that receiving an application reference means your indexing has been approved.
Your school's role in indexing
NMCN says the indexing process begins with an accredited institution. Approved institutions have official accounts through which student information is supplied to the Council.
The school is expected to help confirm:
that you were admitted into the correct programme
that your details match the school's records
that your entry qualifications are valid
that your admission falls within the approved student quota
that any required school clearance has been completed
Follow the current instructions from the officer responsible for indexing at your institution. Avoid relying on an old portal screenshot or a checklist from a different programme.

Entry requirements checked during indexing
For the common academic requirement, NMCN publishes five O-level credits in:
English Language
Mathematics
Biology
Chemistry
Physics
The Council states that the credits should be obtained in no more than two sittings from WAEC, NECO or NABTEB.
Foreign examination-board results require additional evaluation and verification. See the NMCN eligibility guide for the full explanation and the issues you should confirm before admission.
Documents NMCN has listed for indexing
NMCN's linked indexing guide historically listed:
a recent colour passport photograph
O-level examination certificate
birth certificate or declaration of age
testimonial
additional civil-status documents in specified cases
That document uses an old portal address and old payment services. Its upload sizes and file-format rules should not be treated as current.
Ask your school for the present checklist before scanning or compressing documents. Make sure every image is readable and every name and date matches the source document.
How the indexing process generally fits together
The stable parts of NMCN's published process are:
You are admitted into an NMCN-approved programme.
Your personal and academic details are prepared for indexing.
Your institution validates the information and performs its required clearance.
NMCN checks qualifications and the institution's approved intake.
Problems may be returned to the school for correction.
NMCN issues an index number to an eligible student.
The current portal steps, payment point and closing date can change. Your school should confirm them for the active session.
Basic, post-basic and BNSc indexing
Basic programmes
NMCN indexes students in basic nursing and midwifery programmes, but the fetched sources do not establish one current deadline for every basic programme. Confirm the submission window with your school.
Post-basic programmes
Post-basic indexing relates to an existing professional qualification as well as the new specialty programme. NMCN's older guide instructed post-basic applicants to begin with their registration number, but the current portal fields were not independently verified.
Confirm that your prior registration, current licence and programme documents match the requirements for your specialty.
University generic BNSc programmes
NMCN's indexing page gives a specific sequence for generic BNSc students. It states that General Nursing indexing occurs at 200 level and describes Midwifery indexing later, after the General Nursing professional examination.
This timing is specific to the university pathway described by NMCN. It should not be applied to every nursing or midwifery programme.
If your application is returned or delayed
NMCN says it identifies applications with indexing problems and returns them to schools for correction and update.
If your indexing is delayed:
ask the school for the exact status or reason
compare your name, date of birth and result details with the submitted documents
correct only the item identified through the official process
keep evidence of the corrected submission
retain your application reference and payment receipt
Do not create a fresh application unless your school or NMCN instructs you to do so.
Changes of school
NMCN lists change-of-school applications among the responsibilities of its Indexing Division. A transfer does not automatically move an index record.
Before changing institutions, confirm:
that the receiving programme is currently approved
that the receiving school has capacity within its approved intake
which documents and approvals NMCN requires
whether your existing index record must be amended
Complete the official process before assuming that your student record has moved.
Fees, dates and portal instructions
This guide does not quote an indexing fee or application window because the current amounts and dates were not verified from a dated 2026 NMCN source.
NMCN's older indexing PDF also describes payment services that differ from those referenced by the current website. Before paying:
verify the service and amount in the official payment workflow
keep the official receipt and application reference
An old closing date or payment instruction can cause a valid application to miss the current process.
What comes after indexing?
Your index number connects your student record to the professional examination process, but your school must still confirm that you meet the conditions to be presented.
