NMCN resits and attempt rules: verified guidance and policy conflict

Understand NMCN's Basic and Post-Basic resit routes, the evidence candidates need, and the unresolved conflict between an old Council page and a reported 2025 reform.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria provides separate application routes for Basic and Post-Basic examination resits.
NMCN's undated application guide describes a resit applicant as a candidate in a Basic or Post-Basic programme who has referred papers from a previous examination. The guide also says resit applicants provide their NMCN index number before completing the application.
Before starting a resit application, ask your school to confirm your official result status and the examination paper or part connected to your record. Do not decide what to retake from an unofficial result list or another candidate's experience.
These are official nmcn.gov.ng routes. They returned server errors during our public review on 16 September 2026, so availability may vary. Ask your school officer whether the portal is open for your sitting before submitting information or making payment.
NMCN's application guide says the portal displays the papers a candidate is required to sit after the examination type is selected. The guide contains legacy portal and payment instructions, so use your school's current Council instructions for the live application process.
Important warning about NMCN attempt rules
NMCN's publicly available information contains a serious unresolved conflict.
The Council's undated Examination Division page still describes an older rule under which a candidate with two sittings completes a one-year tutorial before a last attempt, followed by elimination if that attempt is unsuccessful.
Several reputable Nigerian publications reported that an NMCN circular dated 1 September 2025 abolished elimination after three unsuccessful attempts and changed how failed examination parts are retaken. The reports consistently identify the circular as N&MCN/SG/RO/CIR/24/VOL.5/118. However, we did not locate that circular on an official NMCN web address, and the older Council page remains online.
Learn therefore does not present either version as the settled current rule. Before relying on an attempt limit, tutorial requirement, attendance condition or retake arrangement, request the current NMCN circular through your training institution or the Council.
How many NMCN attempts are allowed?
The current number-of-attempts rule could not be verified from a current first-party NMCN source available online on 16 September 2026.
Do not rely on a simple claim that every candidate has three attempts. Do not rely on a claim that every candidate has unlimited attempts either. The unresolved 2025 policy change may affect the old rule, but its official scope and current implementation need direct confirmation.
Ask your school to confirm:
the circular currently governing your examination category;
how NMCN records your previous sittings;
whether you must remain enrolled;
whether a tutorial or attendance condition applies; and
which examination paper or part you are eligible to retake.
Do candidates retake every paper?
NMCN's application guide refers to resit candidates with referred papers and says the application displays the papers the candidate is required to sit. This supports checking the papers attached to your individual application.
It does not establish a universal rule that every candidate retakes the whole examination or only one component. Your official result and current NMCN instructions should determine the correct papers.

When are NMCN resits held?
NMCN's annual examination page gives recurring months for Midwifery, General Nursing, and General or Post-Basic Nursing sittings. A separate NMCN circular from 2 January 2018 moved Post-Basic resits from November to May at that time.
That circular is old, and no current first-party confirmation of the Post-Basic resit month was found. Check the NMCN exam dates page for the published annual pattern, then obtain the exact sitting date and application deadline from your school.
What to prepare before a resit application
Confirm the current requirements with your school. Based on the official information that is available, useful records to have ready include:
your NMCN index number;
your official examination result or status supplied through your institution;
the examination category and previous sitting;
the paper or part your school says is referred;
current school clearance instructions; and
current payment and closing-date information.
Do not use old fee amounts or payment channels without confirmation. The reviewed NMCN application guide contains legacy payment references.
Preparing for the paper or part you must retake
Once your school confirms what applies to your record, use the NMCN syllabus guide to map the relevant study areas. Review the limitations on the NMCN exam format page, especially where NMCN has not publicly specified question counts, duration or pass marks.
You can then use NMCN practice on Learn to revise consistently. Practice should follow the study scope confirmed for you, not an assumed attempt or scoring rule.
How this policy conflict will be updated
Learn will update this page when an official NMCN-hosted copy of the September 2025 reform, a newer Council circular, or a current candidate instruction resolves the conflict. A dated policy notice should also be published in NMCN updates so candidates can see what changed and when.
